The eaves heating system is a snow and ice melting solution that prevents the ice dam that forms at the edge of pitched roofs, the icicles beneath the eaves and the sudden shedding of snow. A band along the roof edge is heated; the meltwater runs safely over this band into the gutter and downpipe. The band is built with RoofMat metal mat — the cable arrives fixed at even spacing on a metal carrier at the factory — and with a control panel with a moisture sensor it runs only when there really is icing.
On a pitched roof with no eaves heating system, snow first spreads across the surface. Heat rising from inside the building, together with the sun, melts the snow in the middle of the roof from below; as the meltwater runs downwards it reaches the coldest part of the roof — the unheated eaves — and freezes again there. The ice that builds up forms a dam, and the water ponding behind it seeps under the covering.

A panel is mandatory with an eaves heating system; an installation without one falls outside the warranty. The reason is simple: the system needs to switch itself on while snow is falling and off when the weather clears. The length of the run and the nature of the building determine the choice of panel.
