Überblick
Downpipe heating is a system that prevents snowmelt from the roof from freezing again in the vertical downpipe run and blocking the pipe. A single row of HMax self-regulating heating cable is lowered inside the pipe; the cable runs the length of the pipe and lets the water drain away without freezing. It is the last link in the drainage chain: if the water melted at the eaves and in the gutter freezes in the downpipe, the run still blocks. The system runs only when there is a risk of icing, and on runs longer than 20 metres it is managed from a control panel.
The downpipe is the coldest part of the roof drainage: it runs exposed along the outside of the building, catches the wind and has no source of heat to warm the water standing inside it. A thin layer that freezes overnight thickens steadily, the bore of the pipe narrows, and at some point the run closes completely.

Passend, wenn
- Your downpipes block, crack or overflow and form a layer of ice on the facade in winter.
- Your pipe material is galvanised steel, copper, aluminium, steel or PVC — there is a separate cable type for metal and for PVC, at the same price.
- Eaves and gutter heating is already in place or planned and you want to complete the last link in the drainage chain.
- You will apply it to existing pipes afterwards; the cable is lowered through the top mouth of the pipe and there is no need to remove it.
- If the run exceeds 20 metres you are able to buy a control panel; on short runs, control from the fuse is enough.
Nicht geeignet, wenn
- If the ice forms inside the gutter — downpipe heating alone is not enough; Roof Gutter and Valley Heating heats the base of the gutter.
- If the problem is the ice dam and icicles at the roof edge — Roof Edge Eaves Heating heats a band along the roof edge.
- If a fire sprinkler line or a pressurised installation pipe is freezing — Fire Sprinkler Line Frost Protection mounts the cable on the outside of the pipe and covers it with insulation.
- If you are heating a floor, ramp or building entrance — Snow and Ice Melting Under Concrete and Stair and Building Entrance Heating are separate products.
- If siphonic drainage outlet heating is required — this calculation is project-based and falls outside the steps on this page.
Installation
- PreparationThe mouth of the pipe and the outlet are cleared of leaves and sediment; no blockage is left that would stop the cable going down. The pipe type (metal or PVC) is confirmed.
- Lowering the cableThe cable is lowered inside through the top mouth of the pipe and travels to the bottom under its own weight. It is fixed at the top mouth with an installation accessory. If the gutter run is heated as well, the junction between them is arranged.
- Sensor and electrical connectionThe temperature sensor is placed at a point that stays in shade and the moisture sensor on an exposed surface. A qualified electrician makes the panel connection and the supply line.
Who should install it? On short downpipes reached from the ground floor your own electrician can carry out the work. On tall facades and multi-block complexes, installation by the company is recommended — facade and roof installation is assessed separately after a survey. No work is done on a facade without safety measures in place.

Is downpipe heating enough on its own?
Downpipe heating is the last link in the drainage chain. If your gutter freezes, the water cannot reach the downpipe in the first place; in that case the gutter run needs heating as well. For complete protection it is recommended that the eaves, gutter and downpipe be planned together.
How do I calculate the length?
Number of pipes × pipe height. Four pipes of 8 metres come to 32 metres; you select 40 metres, the next step up in the selector. There is no allowance or correction factor; any surplus cable is cut on site.
Should I choose HMax30 or HMax20?
HMax30 (30 W/m) is used in metal pipes (galvanised steel, copper, aluminium, steel) and HMax20 (20 W/m) in PVC and plastic pipes. The lower power is chosen for PVC because a high surface temperature can deform plastic. The two are the same price — you need only state the pipe type on the order.
Does the cable run inside the pipe?
Yes. In downpipe heating the cable is lowered inside through the top mouth of the pipe and travels to the bottom under its own weight. No fixing to the outside of the pipe and no removal or replacement of the pipe is needed; it is applied to existing pipes afterwards.
