Überblick

Stair and Building Entrance Heating is a system that keeps outdoor stair treads, landings and the flat area in front of the door free of snow and ice with a 350 W/m² electric heater buried beneath the covering. The heater is either TMaxPro cable laid to the geometry of the treads or, on flat landings, ProMat mat; the two are the same cable, deliver the same power and cost exactly the same per square metre. The system runs by itself from a control panel with moisture and temperature sensors — nobody has to get up early to shovel the steps.

In a courtyard, ice makes a vehicle skid; on a staircase it makes a person fall. That is why there is no partial solution on stairs: if nine of ten treads are clear and one is icy, the system has not done its job. The heating covers every horizontal surface a pedestrian steps on.

Auf einen Blick

Treads, landings and the door approach togetherEvery horizontal surface a pedestrian steps on is heated; not even a single icy tread is left.
350 W/m² outdoor snow melting powerSnow melts faster than it falls, and the meltwater drains away without refreezing on the tread.
No salt or shovel requiredNatural stone and granite treads are damaged by salt; heating solves the problem without touching the surface at all.
Automatic control that detects precipitationIt switches on when snow starts and off when the surface dries. Our own CE-certified manufacture since 1995.

Einsatzbereiche

TMaxPro cable + fixing strip

The only practical solution on tread geometry

TMaxPro cable + fixing strip The cable comes at the calculated length together with its fixing strip. It runs without a break from tread to tread, is spaced closer at the nosing and wider at the back, and passes through conduit at transitions. Even if the tread dimensions are out by a few centimetres, the laying spacing is adjusted on site.

ProMat ready-made mat

Shortens the laying work on landings and at the door

ProMat ready-made mat The same cable comes laid out at the correct spacing on a stiff mesh, in 50 and 100 cm widths. On a flat landing the roll is unrolled and fixed down; at turns only the mesh is cut. It is the quickest option if only the flat area in front of the door is to be heated.

Passend, wenn

  • You have an outdoor staircase, landing or flat area in front of a door and icing creates a pedestrian safety problem in winter.
  • The staircase is being newly built or its covering renewed — the heater goes beneath the covering; it is not applied over an existing surface.
  • The covering is natural stone, granite, ceramic or concrete and you do not want to use salt.
  • The heated area is between 4 and 50 m²; treads, landing and door approach are calculated together.
  • The location is one that carries liability — the entrance to an apartment building, a housing complex, a hotel, a hospital or a public building.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

  • If you are heating a whole ramp or a courtyard — Snow and Ice Melting Under Concrete is dimensioned for that geometry.
  • If you are heating only the vehicle wheel tracks — Ramp Wheel-Track Heating gives the same power at a much lower connected load.
  • If you do not want to lift the existing covering — the heater is buried beneath the covering, not laid over it.
  • For a roof, gutter or downpipe — roof and gutter snow melting is a separate product.
  • If you are heating an internal staircase or an enclosed hallway — 350 W/m² is far too high for an enclosed space; see the floor heating family.

Installation

  1. PreparationThe tread concrete and the landing are levelled and the surface is cleaned. The surfaces to be heated and the edge margins are marked out; the transition points between treads are established and protective conduits put in place. The panel position and the cold lead route are planned from the outset — once the staircase is finished, pulling cable is not possible.
  2. LayingOn each tread surface the cable is laid with closer spacing towards the nosing and wider spacing towards the back, and fixed to the strip. Transitions from tread to tread are made inside conduit; sharp turns are avoided. If mat is used on the landing, the roll is unrolled and taped down. The sensor conduit is placed on the surface that warms up last.
  3. Connection, testing, coveringThe cold leads are run to the panel; an electrician makes the connection, the supply is taken through a 30 mA residual current device, and the earth screen is bonded to the busbar. An ohm test is carried out before the covering is laid and the result is recorded. Once the test is passed, the mortar and covering are applied; the system is commissioned in stages after the mortar has dried completely.
The ohm test is carried out before the covering goes on, not after. If the resistance is not within the expected range, nothing is covered over. Reaching a fault on a staircase later means lifting the tread covering.

Häufige Fragen

Are the risers heated as well?
No. The heating covers horizontal surfaces only: tread tops, the landing and the door approach. Nobody steps on the vertical face of a riser and snow does not settle there; heating it would waste energy. Risers are not counted in the heated area calculation either.
How do I work out how many square metres to select?
Find the tread area from number of treads × staircase width × tread depth, then add the landing and the flat area in front of the door. A staircase with 8 treads, 1.4 m wide and 32 cm deep comes to 3.58 m²; together with a 2.24 m² landing that is about 5 m².
Why should the bottom tread and the foot of the stairs be heated too?
Because water runs downhill under gravity. If the heating stops at the upper treads, the meltwater freezes on the unheated lower tread and you have simply moved the ice to the most dangerous point. The heated area is extended to the walking surface at the foot of the stairs and, where there is one, as far as the drain.
Can it be applied to my existing staircase?
Yes, if the covering is being renewed: the existing covering is lifted, the heater is laid and the new covering goes down. Application without lifting the covering is not possible; the heater goes beneath the surface, not over it.
Can it be used on natural stone and granite treads?
Yes — they are in fact the most suitable coverings. Stone conducts heat well, and because it is damaged by salt, heating is the only real alternative to salt here. The heater does not touch the stone directly; there is mortar or adhesive in between.
