Overview

Floor Heating Cable is an electric heating element laid beneath screed or ceramic adhesive that heats the floor across its whole surface. TMax cable, the core of the HomeMax floor heating family, is single-core and series-resistance; it is not self-regulating, and the temperature is limited by a thermostat with a floor sensor. You set the laying spacing yourself according to the geometry of the floor — this flexibility is the one thing that separates cable from ready-made solutions with the cable stitched onto mesh at the factory. The same cable is also sold in ready-made form as the EasyMat floor heating mat.

Is this the right product?

A good fit when

  • You will hide the heater beneath screed or ceramic adhesive and lay the floor covering afterwards.
  • Your floor is narrow, full of turns or dense with services; you want to plan the laying spacing yourself.
  • You know the step that corresponds to the place you are heating, or you are happy to ask us.
  • You will be working in a wet room: the heating element, the floor sensor and the site connections are IP67 rated.
  • Your circuit has a 30 mA residual current device or you can have one fitted; you will have the connection made by a qualified electrician.

Not the right choice when

  • If you cannot pour screed — if you will lay the heater directly beneath laminate parquet, carbon heating film is the right product: 200 W/m², under 1 mm thick, 2-year warranty.
  • If you want to lay a wide, empty floor in the shortest possible time — the EasyMat floor heating mat is the same cable at the same price and shortens the laying.
  • If you are heating a ramp, staircase or driveway in the open air — this cable has no UV protection and is not left exposed to outdoor conditions; the products in the snow and ice melting category are used.
  • If you plan to shorten the cable on site — this product cannot be cut; the length is made to order.
  • If you do not want to buy a thermostat — the system is not run without one; the thermostat is not included on this page and is bought separately.

Installation

  1. Work out the net areaDeduct the surface taken up by fixed furniture that sits flush with the floor, and the margins along the walls. This figure is the basis for both the order and the laying.
  2. Prepare the floorSweep the surface and remove any sharp projections. Insulation underlay is laid at this step to reduce heat escaping downwards.
  3. Fix the stripThe fixing strip is fastened to the floor with screws or adhesive; this rail sets the laying spacing.
  4. Lay the cableSeat the cable in the teeth of the strip, keep the runs from touching or crossing one another, and do not go below a 30 mm bending radius at turns. Close the loop back at the point where you started.
  5. Position the sensorThe floor sensor is placed exactly midway between two runs, passed through installation conduit — so that in the event of a fault it can be pulled out and replaced without breaking up the floor.
  6. Have the connection made and the ohm test carried outThe cold leads are pulled to the thermostat box; the connection is made with 30 mA residual current protection and earthing. The resistance value is measured and recorded before laying, after laying and after screeding.
  7. Cover it overThe screed must cover the cable with no voids; the mortar must be of a runny consistency and must contain no sharp aggregate such as crushed stone. The system is not run before the screed has fully cured.
The ohm test before screeding is never skipped. If the resistance is outside the expected range, nothing is covered over: after screeding, a fault can only be found by breaking up the floor. Write the measurement results on the back of the manual; this is the document that speeds up a warranty claim.

Frequently asked questions

How many square metres does the floor heating cable cover?
On the order you state the heated area, not the metres; the cable is prepared for that area. The rule for dimensioning is an average of 10 metres per square metre, which corresponds to roughly 10 cm laying spacing. Tell us the area and we will work out the cable at the correct resistance and length.
Can I shorten the cable at home?
No. In a series-resistance cable, the length and the power are tied to one another; cutting it alters the resistance, damages the product permanently and voids the warranty. If there is surplus, it is absorbed within the area by slightly tightening the laying spacing — the cable is never cut.
Is the thermostat included in the package?
It is not. This page sells the heating element: the cable, the fixing strip and the floor sensor are included in the price, the thermostat is not. Because it is mandatory, you need to choose a model from the thermostat page when ordering; it is sent in the same parcel.
Which is better, cable or ready-made mat?
The heater inside the two is the same TMax cable, and the only difference between them is how it is arranged. Cable wins on narrow floors with turns and obstacles; mat wins on wide, rectangular, empty surfaces. Because the price per square metre is the same, the decision rests entirely on the floor plan.
What is the highest temperature the floor reaches?
The maximum floor temperature is 45 °C, but this figure is not reached in everyday use. The target temperature is set from the thermostat in each space; the 22 – 25 °C band is enough on a domestic floor. Beneath laminate parquet the surface temperature is never taken above 25 °C.
