HMax is a self-regulating heating cable made to prevent pipelines freezing. Thanks to the carbon matrix inside it, every centimetre of the cable responds independently to the ambient temperature: where it cools, resistance falls and power output rises; where it warms, resistance rises and output falls. As a result the cable reduces its own output wherever it overlaps itself, and every point works to its own requirement even when the temperature varies along the run. It is made in 10, 20 and 30 W/m ratings, and all three cost the same.

The carbon matrix between the two conductors is the heating element of the cable. This matrix expands and contracts with temperature; as it expands the carbon particles move apart, electrical resistance rises and the current passing at that point falls. When it cools, the opposite happens. A self-regulating heating cable therefore behaves not like one thermostat but like thousands of independent miniature thermostats — every centimetre responds to the temperature at its own location.

Self-regulating heating cable is used on any line where the liquid inside freezing or cooling is a problem. There are two basic purposes: frost protection — holding the liquid above freezing point; and temperature maintenance — holding the liquid at a particular working temperature. Both are done with the same cable; what changes is the rating and the running time.

مناسب عندما

  • Your line has a high density of irregular surfaces such as valves, flanges, pumps and elbows, and you want the cable to reduce its own output where it overlaps itself.
  • Temperature varies along the run — part of it is in the sun, part in shade or exposed outdoors.
  • You want to measure and cut on site; self-regulating heating cable is cut on site and comes with an integrated cold lead.
  • A power band suited to your pipe diameter is sufficient: 10–20 W/m up to Ø50 mm, 20–30 W/m for Ø50–100 mm.
  • You can cover the cable with pipe insulation — heat tracing is always laid beneath the insulation.

  • The specification calls for a fixed W/m figure, or a long straight run needs equal output at every metre — the SMax constant-wattage pipe heating cable is made for that.
  • The surface to be heated is not a pipe but a tank or silo body — industrial tank heat tracing is sized by surface area.
  • You want to heat a valve or a short pipe section with a removable solution — heated flange and valve jackets and heated pipe jackets are the alternative to cable.
  • A hazardous area (Ex) classification is required — this cable is not explosion protected.

A system without insulation does not work efficiently. Insulation keeps the heat produced in the pipe; on an uninsulated run the cable works continuously, consumption rises and the risk of freezing is still not fully removed. Heat tracing and insulation are not separate products but two parts of one solution. The cable goes beneath the insulation — placed over it, most of the heat it produces is lost to the air.

ISITMAX has manufactured electric heating products in its own facility since 1995; manufacturing is CE certified. PTC thermistor behaviour is a good starting point for a general description of self-regulating heating cable technology — the carbon matrix in HMax works on the same principle, raising its resistance as the temperature rises.

What does self-regulating heating cable mean?
It means the cable sets its own power output according to the ambient temperature. Because every centimetre of the cable behaves independently, each point works to its own requirement even when temperatures vary along the run.
Is a thermostat needed?
Not mandatory — a self-regulating heating cable reduces its own output as the temperature rises. However, residual current protection and correct earthing are mandatory. If you want energy savings and automatic switching, a heating control panel is added; the Ekoline series is sufficient for a single circuit, while Proline or Maxline is used on multi-circuit installations.
Will the self-regulating heating cable burn out if it overlaps itself?
No. Where the cable crosses over itself that point warms, resistance rises and the output falls back by itself. That is why wrapping the cable a few turns around valves and flanges is permitted — something never done with constant-wattage cable.
Which wattage should I choose?
10–20 W/m on plastic pipe and 20–30 W/m on metal pipe. By diameter: 10–20 W/m up to Ø50 mm, 20–30 W/m for Ø50–100 mm, and 30 W/m or two runs above Ø100 mm. Do not exceed the 20 W/m limit on plastic pipe. All three ratings cost the same.
Can self-regulating heating cable be cut on site?
Yes, it is cut to the length required and connected via its integrated cold lead. The cut point is sealed with a splice and termination kit; a cut end is never left open.
