SMax is a constant-wattage pipe heating cable made to prevent pipelines from freezing and to hold the liquid at its working temperature. Its difference from self-regulating cables is this: SMax delivers the same wattage to every metre of the run and does not change its output with the ambient temperature. It is therefore the choice on projects where the specification calls for a particular W/m figure, and on long straight runs. It is made in 20, 30, 40 and 50 W/m power options, all four at the same price. A control panel is mandatory — because the cable does not throttle itself, the panel manages the temperature.

SMax is a constant-wattage pipe heating cable of parallel construction. Two supply conductors run side by side along the cable; resistance sections connected between them at set intervals produce the heat. Because each section delivers the same power on its own, the wattage does not change along the run — the first metre of the cable and the thirtieth produce the same heat.

مناسب عندما

  • Your project specification calls for a fixed W/m figure; equal heat output is required at every metre along the run.
  • Your run is long and straight; the density of valves, flanges and pumps is low and the cable will not overlap itself.
  • High power in the 20–50 W/m range is required; on metal pipe above Ø100 mm, constant-wattage pipe heating cable delivers the required wattage directly.
  • You are able to operate the run with a control panel and a temperature sensor.
  • The fault isolation feature of the parallel construction is useful to you: apart from the damaged section, the run keeps working.

غير مناسب عندما

  • If the geometry will make the cable overlap itself — on runs with a high density of valves, flanges and elbows, constant-wattage cable overheats at that point. HMax self-regulating heating cable is used for that job.
  • If you do not want to install a panel — without a thermostat, SMax runs continuously. At the scale of a single domestic pipe, a garden tap or a meter box, installing a panel and a circuit is unnecessary anyway; HMax, whose thermostat is optional, is used for those jobs.
  • The surface to be heated is not a pipe but a tank or silo body — industrial tank heat tracing is sized by surface area.
  • You want to heat a valve or a short pipe section with a removable solution — heated flange and valve jackets and heated pipe jackets are the alternative to cable.
  • A hazardous area (Ex) classification is required — this cable is not explosion protected.

A system without insulation does not work efficiently. The insulation keeps the heat that is produced in the pipe; on an uninsulated run the cable works continuously, consumption rises and the protection is still not complete. The cable goes beneath the insulation. Fix the sensor on the opposite side of the pipe from the cable as well, so that it sees the temperature of the pipe and not of the cable — a sensor placed next to it shuts the system down too early.

ISITMAX has manufactured electric heating products in its own facility since 1995; the manufacture is CE-certified. The concept of electrical resistance is a good starting point for classifying heating cables in general: in constant-wattage cables the heat is released across sections of fixed resistance.

Is a control panel really mandatory?
Yes. Constant-wattage pipe heating cable produces the same heat for as long as it is energised; with no panel to stop the system, the pipe rises far above the target temperature. The panel switches the cable on and off according to the value it reads from the sensor on the pipe surface. Residual current protection and correct earthing are mandatory as well.
Which wattage should I choose?
20 W/m on plastic pipe — this figure must not be exceeded. On metal pipe, according to diameter: 20–30 W/m up to Ø50 mm, 30–40 W/m for Ø50–100 mm, and 40–50 W/m or a twin run above Ø100 mm. All four powers are the same price.
Can constant-wattage pipe heating cable be cut on site?
Yes, it is cut to the required length and connected with an integral cold lead. The cut point is sealed with a splice and termination kit. The cable must not, however, be overlapped — it overheats where it crosses itself.
What does fault isolation mean?
SMax is of parallel construction: if the cable is damaged at a point, only the section between the two contact points either side of the damage stops heating, and the rest of the run keeps working. In series-connected cables a single break puts the whole run out of service.
