HMax is a self-regulating heating cable made to prevent pipelines freezing. Thanks to the carbon matrix inside it, every centimetre of the cable responds independently to the ambient temperature: where it cools, resistance falls and power output rises; where it warms, resistance rises and output falls. As a result the cable reduces its own output wherever it overlaps itself, and every point works to its own requirement even when the temperature varies along the run. It is made in 10, 20 and 30 W/m ratings, and all three cost the same.
The carbon matrix between the two conductors is the heating element of the cable. This matrix expands and contracts with temperature; as it expands the carbon particles move apart, electrical resistance rises and the current passing at that point falls. When it cools, the opposite happens. A self-regulating heating cable therefore behaves not like one thermostat but like thousands of independent miniature thermostats — every centimetre responds to the temperature at its own location.

Self-regulating heating cable is used on any line where the liquid inside freezing or cooling is a problem. There are two basic purposes: frost protection — holding the liquid above freezing point; and temperature maintenance — holding the liquid at a particular working temperature. Both are done with the same cable; what changes is the rating and the running time.
