Overview

A pipeline frost protection system keeps a line working through the winter by running a heating cable along the outside of the pipe. The same HMax20 series self-regulating cable is applied with different ratings and layouts depending on the duty: preventing water freezing in a cold water line, stopping the temperature dropping along a hot water line, and preventing blockages where flow slows in a waste line. All three applications are covered on this page.

Where it is used

Cold water line — frost protection

Purpose: stop the water freezing and the pipe bursting

For drinking and domestic water lines. Freezing water expands and bursts the pipe. The cable supplies enough heat to hold the line above freezing point. It is used on lines in external walls, basements, lofts, under eaves and in meter rooms.

Hot water line — temperature maintenance

Purpose: hot water at the tap the moment you open it

In bathrooms and kitchens far from the boiler room, litres of water run to waste before it turns hot. The cable maintains the pipe temperature along the line, so no circulation pump or return line is needed. It is the usual choice in houses, hotels and facilities with long pipe runs.

Waste / drainage line

Purpose: prevent freezing and blockage where flow is slow

In waste and drainage lines the water does not flow continuously; stagnant sections freeze, the line blocks and backing up begins. The cable keeps those sections flowing. It is used on exposed waste pipes, external facade drainage and site discharge lines.

Is this the right product?

A good fit when

  • Your water pipe running through an external wall, basement or loft freezes in winter.
  • You wait for hot water to reach the tap and do not want to install a circulation line.
  • Your waste or drainage line blocks in cold weather and you experience backing up.
  • You are protecting several lines on one site and want to work from a price per metre.
  • You are looking for a solution applied from outside the pipe on an existing line, without breaking anything open.

Not the right choice when

  • You are protecting a single short pipe at home and do not want to deal with an installation — the HMax series self-regulating heat trace cable is sold by the metre on its own, and is simpler and cheaper.
  • You will not be able to insulate the pipe; without insulation the system does not work efficiently.
  • What you want to heat is not a pipe but a tank or item of equipment — see the industrial tank heat tracing page.
  • You want to heat a valve, flange or pump body in a removable way; a heated pipe jacket or a heated flange and valve jacket is more suitable.
  • You need a hazardous area (Ex zone) classification — ISITMAX does not supply ATEX / explosion-proof heating cable.

Installation

The work is done from outside the pipe; there is no need to cut into the line or dismantle the pipework.

On buried lines: where pipes run through concrete or inside a wall, the work cannot be done without opening up the line; the cable is run over the pipe during refurbishment.

Warranty and support

The product is covered by a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The warranty covers faults arising from manufacture and materials; incorrect installation, crushing or cutting of the cable, use without insulation and an unsuitable supply voltage are excluded. Technical support is available Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:00; you can consult us project by project on line length, power selection, wrapping layout and the control side. ISITMAX has manufactured its own electric heating products since 1995, and its manufacturing is CE certified.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price per metre or for the whole line?
Per metre. The price on this page is for one metre of cable and is 360 TRY/m for all three line types. Enter the number of metres to be heated in the quantity field in the basket; the total is shown there.
How many metres of cable do I need?
Laid straight you need the length of the line; spiralled you need more, and allowance is left for valves and elbows. Send us the pipe diameter, insulation thickness, line length and your region and we will work out the required length with you.
Does it replace a circulation pump on a hot water line?
That is exactly its purpose. Because the cable maintains the temperature of the hot water pipe along the line, hot water arrives without delay when you open the tap; no separate return line or circulation pump is needed.
Is insulation essential?
Yes. If pipe insulation is not fitted over the cable, most of the heat supplied goes into the air; the line never reaches the target temperature and electricity consumption rises needlessly. Insulation is the single most critical step in determining system efficiency.
Does the cable run continuously?
No. A self-regulating cable increases its output as the pipe cools and reduces it as it warms; with a temperature sensor and thermostat added, the line only comes on when needed. Consumption varies with line length, insulation and outside temperature.
