Überblick

The drum heating unit is a plate-type drum heating device that heats 200 litre steel drums from the base only. The drum is placed on the unit; a 900 W silicone mat heater transfers the heat by contact to the base of the drum through a 2 mm thick steel plate. It keeps products that solidify in the cold — soap, solid fats, paint, varnish, wax, bitumen and mineral oil — fluid and pumpable. In the trade it is also known as a plate drum heater or base drum heater.

The unit forms a hot surface in contact with the base of the drum and delivers the heat from there alone. It has three layers: glass wool base insulation underneath, a silicone mat heater in the middle that spreads the heat evenly, and on top a 2 mm thick steel heating plate on which the drum sits. The temperature is managed by a digital control unit with a proportional driver and a capillary tube thermostat; the thermostat is set between 0 and 150 °C, and once the unit reaches the set point it maintains the temperature across a single zone.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

If you need to melt the whole drum — a drum heating cabinet that heats the drum in an enclosed space is required.
If you use plastic or HDPE drums — the drum heating jacket, which slips over plastic and steel drums, is the right product.
If you are heating a 1000 litre IBC tank — the IBC tank heating jacket is sized for that volume.

If you need to go above 150 °C, to keep heating while the drum is moved, or to work in an open or wet area; the unit is fixed, its upper limit is 150 °C and its protection class is IP40.

Installation

Yes — there is no mechanical installation with this product, only positioning and the electrical connection. The unit arrives in one piece and needs no anchoring. Place it on a flat, solid and dry floor; the floor must be able to carry the weight of a full 200 litre drum. Because of the IP40 rating it is used in an enclosed spot free from splashing water.

Häufige Fragen

Does the drum heating unit melt all the material in the drum?

No. The heat is delivered from the lower surface only, and the material at the top warms very late. The purpose is to prevent freezing, maintain fluidity and pre-heat from the base. For complete melting, use a heating jacket or a drum heating cabinet.

Can I use it on a plastic drum?

Do not. Because the plate heats by contact, there is a risk of deformation with plastic and HDPE drums; the unit is only for standard steel drums. The drum heating jacket, by contrast, can be slipped over both steel and plastic drums.

How long does it take to heat up?

The time varies with the type of material, the fill level and the starting and target temperatures. For an order of magnitude: heating 200 litres of water by 1 °C requires about 0.23 kWh, which 900 W delivers in about 15 minutes with no losses. Because the heat enters from the base only, the real time is longer than this; we work the calculation out in the quotation.

Can I just plug it in and use it?

Yes. The supply is 230 V AC, the unit comes with a 2 m lead and no mechanical installation is needed. The supply must, however, be taken through an earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) and an approved plug must be used. Check the voltage marked on the unit before connecting.

Can I lift the drum off and set it down with a forklift?

Yes, and this is the most practical aspect of the product. The unit stays in place, the drum is lifted off and a new one set down; in businesses that change many drums during the day this is the solution that requires the least labour. Switch the unit off before doing so.
