Überblick

Sprinkler line frost protection cable is a self-regulating heating cable that stops the water inside fire-fighting pipes from freezing. Its difference from an ordinary water line is this: a sprinkler line is not used at all for 364 days of the year, but on the day it is needed it absolutely must work. A frozen line delivers no water in a fire — and this is the fault that is noticed latest of all. This product holds the line continuously at +4 °C with HMax self-regulating cable; the control panel and the pipe temperature sensor are included in the package.

In wet-type sprinkler systems the pipes are permanently full of water. When the water falls below 0 °C it freezes, expands as it freezes and cracks the pipe from the inside. The crack is not noticed at first — when the line thaws the water floods out, or, worse still, in a fire the system cannot deliver the expected flow.

Every point adjusts its own output

The conductive polymer core of HMax changes its resistance with temperature: it gives more power at a cold point and less at a point that has warmed up. If one section is in the sun and another runs along an outside wall, the cable balances this itself.

Because the cable throttles its output where it crosses itself, it does not overheat. In the sections of a sprinkler line dense with valves, flanges and elbows, this feature makes installation both faster and safer.

Passend, wenn

  • Your wet-type sprinkler line passes through a section exposed to the cold — sprinkler line frost protection cable is made for exactly this: car parks, roof voids, external facades, loading bays, unheated warehouses.
  • You can reach the outside of the pipe and are able to fix the cable along its length.
  • You are able to apply at least 50 mm of insulation over the cable.
  • Your pipe diameter is up to DN150; above that you will need a project-based assessment.
  • You are able to take the electrical supply through residual current protection.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

  • If you have a dry-type sprinkler system — because no water stands in the pipe, freezing is dealt with differently and heating cable is not the answer to that problem.
  • If what is to be heated is not a line but the body of a tank or vessel — industrial tank heat tracing is dimensioned by surface area.
  • If you cannot apply insulation — an installation without insulation does not reach the target and falls outside the warranty.
  • If you want to heat a valve or a short section of pipe with a removable solution — the heated flange and valve jacket and the heated pipe jacket are the alternatives.
  • A hazardous area (Ex) classification is required — this cable is not explosion protected.

Three rules for installation: the cable must touch the pipe — a section with a gap in between does not heat. The cable must not be pulled taut; it should be left slightly slack. At valves, flanges and elbows the cable must be left so that it wraps around the body; the allowances in the length calculation are there for this.

Why is the sprinkler line held at +4 °C rather than 0 °C?
The four degrees in between are a safety margin. The sensor measures a single point on the pipe; the coldest point of the run may be another section resting against an outside wall or where the insulation has weakened. If the threshold is set at 0 °C, another part of the run may already have frozen while the point the sensor sees is still above zero.
Which power should I choose for my pipe diameter?
On metal pipe, a single row of HMax 20 W/m is used up to DN100 and two rows of HMax 20 W/m between DN100 and DN150; 50 mm of thermal insulation is essential in both cases. On plastic pipe, a single row and a maximum of 10 W/m is applied regardless of diameter. Diameters above DN150 are assessed on a project basis.
How many metres of sprinkler line frost protection cable are needed?
Allowances for equipment are added to the pipe length: 0.5 m for each valve and flange, 1 m for each pump and 0.3 m for each elbow. The resulting figure is rounded up to the next ready-made length. On a 30 m DN80 run with 4 valves, 1 pump and 6 elbows the calculation comes to 34.8 m, so 40 m is ordered. On metal pipes between DN100 and DN150 a twin run is laid, so the total is multiplied by two.
Does the control panel have to be bought separately?
No. In the sprinkler line frost protection cable set, the control panel and the pipe temperature sensor are included in the package price. Only in multi-circuit installations — several risers, separate blocks, or where other runs also need to be managed from the same point — is a heating control panel from the Ekoline, Proline or Maxline series chosen.
Is insulation essential?
It is. On an uninsulated run the cable gives most of the heat it produces to the air; the pipe cannot reach +4 °C and the bill grows. At least 50 mm of rock wool or glass wool is wrapped over the pipe and cable, and covered with aluminium foil. An installation without insulation falls outside the warranty.
