Überblick

Industrial tank heat tracing is a heating cable system wrapped around the body of storage and process tanks: it prevents the liquid inside freezing, or holds it at a temperature that maintains flowability. It differs from pipe heating in how it is sized: the calculation is based on the surface area to be heated, not the length of the run. The packages on this page are offered in eight steps from 5 m² to 100 m²; cable, fixing materials and engineering are included in the package.

A tank cools the liquid inside it towards ambient temperature. In winter that means freezing; and with viscous fluids such as resin, honey, oil and molasses it means becoming unpumpable long before freezing point is reached. Tank heat tracing solves both problems the same way: a heating cable wrapped around the body replaces the heat the tank loses from its surface.

Einsatzbereiche

Frost protection

The liquid is held at around +5 °C

In water, process water, drainage and fire water tanks the aim is simply to prevent freezing. The system runs in winter only when the temperature falls below the threshold; for most of the year it is off.

Temperature maintenance

The liquid is held at working temperature

In resin, honey, oil and chemical tanks the aim is to maintain flowability. The target temperature is set by the product and the system runs all year round, which makes insulation thickness and panel selection more critical.

Ist dies das richtige Produkt?

Passend, wenn

  • The surface to be heated is a tank, silo or storage vessel; industrial tank heat tracing is sized in , not metres.
  • You can reach the outside of the tank and fix the cable to the body.
  • You can cover the cable with insulation — this is a condition of the system working at all.
  • Your heated area is between 5 and 100 m²; above that you will need a project-specific price.
  • You can operate the circuit with a control panel and temperature sensor.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

  • The surface to be heated is a pipeline rather than a tank — the quantity is then based on the length of the run; HMax and SMax cable are sold by the metre.
  • You want to heat a valve, flange or short pipe section with a removable solution — heated flange and valve jackets and heated pipe jackets are the alternative to cable.
  • For portable containers such as drums, IBC tanks or canisters — jacket-type products exist for these; cable wrapping is not used.
  • You cannot insulate the tank — an uninsulated installation cannot reach the target and falls outside the warranty.
  • A hazardous area (Ex) classification is required — HMax and SMax are not explosion protected.

Installation

  1. with the tank emptyCleaning the surface and marking out the cable route
  2. strapping or tapeLaying and fixing the cable to the pattern
  3. inside the junction boxSupply, termination and sensor connection
  4. last of allInsulation and outer cladding
Three rules for installation: the cable must be in contact with the tank wall — any section with a gap behind it will not heat. The cable must not be pulled tight; leave it slightly slack. SMax must never overlap itself — where it crosses it overheats and the product falls outside the warranty.

Garantie und Support

ISITMAX has manufactured electric heating products in its own facility since 1995; manufacturing, including the industrial tank heat tracing packages, is CE certified. The concept of heat transfer is a good starting point for the physics behind tank heating: the system supplies just enough power to replace the heat the tank loses from its surface by convection and radiation.

Häufige Fragen

Is the heated area the total surface of the tank?
No. The heated area is 80% of the tank surface area. The remaining 20% is where the cable cannot be routed: legs, weld seams, the manhole cover and nozzles. On a Ø2 m × 3 m tank the surface is roughly 22 m² and the heated area roughly 18 m²; in that case the next package up, 20 m², is chosen.
Should I choose self-regulating or constant wattage for industrial tank heat tracing?
HMax is used for frost protection and low to medium temperature maintenance: every point regulates its own output according to its temperature, it can be wrapped over itself, and a thermostat is optional. SMax is used where the specification calls for a particular W/m figure, or where equal output is needed at every point on a large tank; with SMax a control panel is mandatory.
Can industrial tank heat tracing be retrofitted to an existing, full tank?
Yes. Because the cable is applied to the outside of the tank body, the tank does not have to be emptied. The existing insulation does have to be removed and reinstated after installation, however, which makes a planned maintenance shutdown the easiest time to do the work.
Is insulation essential?
It is essential. On an uninsulated tank the cable gives most of the heat it produces to the air; the system runs continuously, never reaches the target and the bill rises. Rock wool or glass wool is wrapped around it and covered with aluminium foil or sheet cladding. An uninsulated installation is also outside the warranty.
How is the industrial tank heat tracing cable fixed to the tank?
On equipment up to 2 metres in diameter, with polyester strapping at intervals of at least 25 cm and no more than 50 cm. On larger diameters and in tight passages, fibreglass fixing tape is used. The cable must be in contact with the body, must not be pulled tight, and with SMax must never overlap itself.
