Overview

The Eberle temperature and moisture sensor is the component that decides when a snow melting or de-icing system runs. The sensor measures the actual condition on the roof surface or in the concrete slab; the controller uses that measurement to bring the heating cable in or keep it off. This page brings together four Eberle temperature and moisture sensor models for roof and ground: two temperature, two moisture.

Where it is used

Roof surface temperature sensor — TFD 524 004

Answers the question "is it cold?" on the roof

An NTC sensor that measures the temperature of the roof surface. In gutter, valley and downpipe heating it ensures the system comes on at temperatures where there is a risk of freezing. Protection class IP65.

Roof moisture sensor — ESD 524 003

Adds the question "is the surface wet?" on the roof

A sensor that detects precipitation and moisture; used in de-icing and snow melting systems. Working together with a temperature sensor, it stops the system running needlessly on dry, cold nights.

Ground surface temperature sensor — TFF 524 002

Measures the temperature on ramps and outdoor slabs

An NTC temperature sensor embedded in concrete. It monitors the ground temperature in snow melting systems on ramps, garage entrances, steps and open areas, and can also be used in floor heating applications.

Ground moisture sensor — ESF 524 001

Detects wetness in the concrete

A moisture sensor for outdoor de-icing and snow melting systems. It is supplied with a 15 m supply cable, so it can be placed on a ramp or entrance well away from the panel.

Is this the right product?

A good fit when

  • You have an Eberle EM 524 89 or EM 524 90 controller and will buy the sensors separately.
  • You want to automate gutter, valley or downpipe heating.
  • You will be embedding a sensor in concrete for a ramp, garage entrance or step snow melting system.
  • You are replacing a failed Eberle temperature and moisture sensor with the same model.
  • You want to stop your system running needlessly on dry, cold nights.

Not the right choice when

  • You do not have a compatible Eberle controller — a sensor on its own operates nothing.
  • You will be controlling room temperature indoors; floor heating thermostat models are more suitable and more economical for that.
  • You want to measure temperature on a pipeline; see the heating system temperature sensor page.
  • You need a hazardous area (Ex zone) classification — these sensors have no explosion protection.

Installation

Successful installation depends on placing the sensor at the right point. The correct Eberle temperature and moisture sensor placed at the wrong point will run the system either too early or too late — however faultless the component itself may be.

Warranty and support

Every Eberle temperature and moisture sensor carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The warranty covers faults arising from manufacture and materials; incorrect installation, mechanical impact, crushing during the concrete pour and unsuitable supply voltage are excluded. Technical support is available Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:00; you can consult us project by project on sensor selection, positioning and wiring. The warranty starts automatically with the invoice; full conditions are on the SafeMax Warranty Programme page. ISITMAX has manufactured its own electric heating products since 1995, and its manufacturing is CE certified.

Frequently asked questions

Is one sensor enough, or do I need both?
The system will work with a temperature sensor alone; but it will then come on every time the air drops below a set temperature, even if the surface is dry. Adding the moisture sensor makes the system look for the condition "cold and wet". This is what makes the biggest difference to the electricity bill. For a fully automatic installation, add one temperature and one moisture sensor to the basket separately.
Can I use the roof sensor on the ground, or the ground sensor on the roof?
It is not recommended. Roof sensors are made to sit on the surface or inside a gutter, while ground sensors are made to be embedded in concrete. Choose the model suited to the location.
Which controller do Eberle temperature and moisture sensors work with?
They work with Eberle EM 524 89 and EM 524 90 controllers. To buy the controller separately, see the control set page; if you want the controller, panel and wiring together, see the heating control panel page.
Can an Eberle temperature and moisture sensor be used with another brand of thermostat?
These products are offered for the Eberle EM 524 89 and EM 524 90; compatibility is guaranteed through those units. If you have a controller of another make, send us its sensor type and wiring diagram and we will check compatibility with you. If it does not match, you will need to use that unit's own sensor family.
The sensor cable is too short — can I extend it?
Yes. The 3 m cable on the TFD 524 004 and TFF 524 002 sensors can be extended; the joint must be sealed so that water cannot enter. The ESF 524 001 already comes with a 15 m supply cable.
