Overview

A heating control panel starts and stops the heating cable automatically according to weather and surface conditions. Temperature — and, on Proline and Maxline, moisture as well — is read from a sensor, and the system comes on only when needed. There is no switching on and off by hand, no circuits left running and no wasted energy. A heating control panel is mandatory in roof, gutter, ramp, under-concrete and heat trace applications; an installation without a panel falls outside the warranty.

Where it is used

Heat tracing

Pipe and tank heating

Prevents water, fire, process and plumbing lines freezing, or holds the liquid at a target temperature. The sensor is fitted to the pipe surface. Panel code HMX.

Floor heating

Under concrete and outdoors

Prevents snow and ice on ramps, car park entrances, footpaths and open slabs. Works with ground surface temperature and moisture sensors. Panel code SMX.

Roof and gutter

Roof de-icing

Prevents icicles and blockages forming in gutters, downpipes and along eaves. Works with roof surface temperature and moisture sensors. Panel code RMX.

A heating control panel is built with different sensors and control logic according to the system it controls. Make your choice according to what you are heating.

Is this the right product?

A good fit when

  • You have laid heating cable, or are about to — a system without a heating control panel burns energy for nothing
  • You want the system to switch itself on and off
  • You need to manage several circuits from one point
  • Residual current protection and a CE-certified panel are required

Not the right choice when

  • You are only doing indoor floor heating — a room thermostat is sufficient
  • For a small cable fed from a single socket — it is more than you need
  • The panel cannot be mounted outdoors; an indoor location or enclosed cubicle is required

Installation

The heating control panel is built and tested at the factory before dispatch. The work on site consists of hanging the panel on the wall and making the connections.

Frequently asked questions

Will a heating cable work without a panel?
It will work, but it will work continuously. As long as the cable is energised it heats, even when the weather is well above zero. A heating control panel brings the system in only when there is a risk of freezing, which markedly reduces electricity consumption and extends the life of the cable.
Is the moisture sensor really necessary?
Not mandatory, but on long runs it pays for itself. A system that looks only at temperature (Ekoline) will run on a dry, cold night even when no ice would form. A moisture reading looks for the condition "cold and wet" together, so the system comes on only when there really is a risk of icing. On short, single-circuit applications Ekoline is sufficient; on long roof and outdoor ground runs, Proline or Maxline is recommended.
Can Ekoline be used on roofs and gutters?
Yes. All three series are offered for all three applications, and Ekoline can be used for roof and gutter de-icing. The difference is the moisture reading: Ekoline looks only at temperature, while Proline and Maxline also measure moisture. On short runs Ekoline is sufficient; on long roof runs a series with a moisture sensor lowers running costs.
How many panels are needed for eaves, gutter and downpipe on the same roof?
One panel is enough. All three circuits connect to the same heating control panel. That is why the selector on all three roof products includes a "Panel to be purchased separately" option: you choose the panel with one product and tick that option on the others.
What is the difference between Ekoline and Proline?
Ekoline drives a single 16 A circuit and looks only at temperature. Proline adds a moisture sensor, 30 mA residual current protection and capacity for up to three circuits. On a small single-circuit application Ekoline is sufficient; outdoors and on multi-circuit systems, Proline is required.
