Overview

A heating system temperature sensor is the component that passes the measured temperature to the thermostat. Without a sensor the system cannot manage itself: the cable either runs continuously or never comes on at all. Two 10K NTC sensor types are offered here, working with ISITMAX HTEC thermostats and Ekoline / Proline control panels.

A heating system temperature sensor contains an NTC thermistor: an element whose resistance falls as temperature rises. The thermostat or control panel continuously reads that resistance between the two leads and calculates the corresponding temperature. When the reading falls below the threshold set on the device, the heating circuit is energised; when it rises above it, the supply is cut.

Where it is used

Panel-type temperature sensor

Reads the ambient or circuit temperature from the panel

A sensor connected to the control panel, with a 4 m lead and a 2-core connection. It is used in systems where measurement at a single point is sufficient, such as snow and ice melting, roof and gutter heating and floor heating.

Pipe surface temperature sensor

Measures directly from the pipe itself

A polyethylene-sheathed sensor with a 3 m mounting lead. It is taped to the surface of the heated pipe and reads the temperature at the point of contact. Choose this type in pipeline frost protection applications where you want to see the actual pipe temperature.

ApplicationSensor typeWhere it is fitted
Pipeline frost protectionheat tracingPipe surfaceTo the bare pipe surface, opposite the cable
Tank and valve heatingPipe surfaceAt the coldest part of the surface, beneath the insulation
Roof, gutter and downpipePanel typeAt the shaded point where ice first forms
Ramp and outdoor ground snow meltingPanel typeIn the slab, at cable level, before the pour
Under-concrete floor heatingPanel typeIn the screed, midway between two cable runs

The choice between the two types comes down to whether what you want to measure is a surface or an ambient. The table below summarises which type is used in the most common applications.

Is this the right product?

A good fit when

  • You are using an ISITMAX HTEC thermostat or an Ekoline / Proline control panel.
  • You want to renew a system whose sensor is damaged, broken or reading incorrectly.
  • You need to add a measuring point to a heating circuit you are installing.
  • You want the system to come on according to temperature rather than run continuously.

Not the right choice when

  • You are looking for a sensor for an Eberle unit — see the Eberle temperature and moisture sensor page.
  • You do not have a thermostat or panel; a sensor on its own operates nothing. Start with a heating control panel.
  • You are looking for a ready-made plug-in solution that comes with its own thermostat.
  • You also want to measure moisture or precipitation; these sensors measure temperature only.

Installation

The system must be de-energised while the connection is made. Have the connection made by a qualified electrician.

Warranty and support

Every heating system temperature sensor carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty. ISITMAX has manufactured its own electric heating products since 1995; manufacturing is CE certified. Our technical support team is available Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:00. If you are unsure about placing the sensor at the right point, share your system diagram with us. The warranty starts automatically with the invoice; full conditions are on the SafeMax Warranty Programme page.

Frequently asked questions

Will the system work if the heating system temperature sensor fails?
It will not work, or it will work incorrectly. The thermostat takes its temperature information from the sensor. If a heating system never warms up or never switches off, the sensor is the first component to check.
How many heating system temperature sensors does one circuit need?
As a rule, one sensor for each independent heating circuit. Even when connected to the same control panel, two runs in different environments do not see the same temperature; trying to manage both from one sensor is certain to run one of them at the wrong time. Tell us how many circuits you have and we will work out the number of sensors with you.
Can I extend the heating system temperature sensor cable?
Extension is possible over short distances, but the joint can affect the reading. If a long distance is required, consult our technical team before ordering.
Can I place the pipe surface sensor on top of the heating cable?
Do not. In that position the sensor reads the temperature of the cable rather than the pipe, the system switches off early and the pipe never reaches the temperature you want. Fix the sensor opposite the cable, in contact with the pipe surface.
Will it fit my existing thermostat?
These sensors are 10K NTC types made to work with ISITMAX HTEC thermostats and Ekoline / Proline control panels. If you are using a device of another make, check that device's sensor type. For Eberle units, see the Eberle temperature and moisture sensor page.
