Überblick

Balcony, terrace and conservatory floor heating is a floor heating system that warms open or glazed floors with a 200 W/m² electric heater embedded under the screed. The shared problem is this: in all three, heat escapes many times faster than in a living room — to the outside air on a balcony, through the glass in a conservatory. The heater is either TMax cable clipped into fixing strip or EasyMat matting with the cable pre-laid on tape; both use the same cable and cost the same. The product is prepared for areas between 2 and 24 m² and belongs to the HomeMax family.

In conservatory floor heating, 200 W/m² is the rating chosen for spaces where heat loss through the floor is higher than indoors; the rating follows from the space, it is not a customer choice. In a room the neighbouring spaces are warm; on a balcony the edge of the floor faces outside air, and in a conservatory the facade is glass, which lets heat through easily.

Einsatzbereiche

TMax cable + fixing strip

Runs without a break on narrow, irregular floors

TMax cable + fixing strip Clipped into the lugs of plastic strip fixed to the floor and laid at roughly 10 cm spacing; on average 10 metres of cable per square metre. It turns around a drain down to a 30 mm bending radius; the fixing strip is included in the price.

EasyMat ready-made matting

Shortens the job on a wide conservatory floor

EasyMat ready-made matting The same cable, factory-laid between industrial carrier tapes; supplied in 50 and 100 cm widths. To change direction you cut the tape — never the heating cable.

Ist dies das richtige Produkt?

Passend, wenn

  • You are heating a conservatory, enclosed terrace, glazed balcony, veranda or open balcony.
  • Once the edge margins are deducted, your heated area falls between 2 and 24 m².
  • The floor will be finished with exterior-grade ceramic, porcelain, natural stone or travertine; at least 3 cm of screed can be poured and a build-up of about 3 cm is acceptable.
  • The floor has waterproofing and a fall to the drain, or you will have this done during the renovation.
  • Your circuit has a 30 mA residual current device, or you can have one fitted.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

  • All you want is to melt snow and ice — then a snow and ice melting cable is the correct product; comfort heating is both expensive and inadequate for that job.
  • Timber or composite decking will stay in place — the air gap under the joists disperses the heat.
  • You are heating a room or living room — room and living room floor heating is calculated at 150 W/m².
  • You are heating a kitchen — kitchen floor heating is the right product; a bathroom calls for 180 W/m².
  • You expect indoor comfort on an open balcony, or waterproofing and drainage will not be done — the first is physically impossible, and in the second case freezing water will lift the finish.

Installation

  1. Preparing the floorWaterproofing is applied to the concrete slab and falls are formed to the drains. The areas that will not be heated are then marked out — the 10 cm strips along the glazing and parapet, the drain grating, and items that sit flush to the floor. The underlay is laid; if you have chosen cable, the fixing strips are secured.
  2. Laying the heaterTMax cable is clipped into the lugs of the fixing strip at roughly 10 cm spacing, never going below the 30 mm bending radius even on the tightest turn. With EasyMat matting the roll is unrolled and fixed down; when changing direction cut only the tape, never the cable. Two runs are never brought close enough to touch; the sensor conduit is placed midway between them.
  3. Electrical connection, screed and finishThe thermostat and sensor must be connected by a qualified electrician. A resistance test is carried out before screeding; if it passes, at least 3 cm of screed is poured, and once cured the finish is laid and the joints are grouted — open joints carry water down to the screed.
Electrical safety. The supply must be 220–240 V AC 50 Hz and the circuit must be protected by a 30 mA residual current device; outdoors this protection is not open to discussion. The resistance test is carried out before the screed is poured; if the reading falls outside the expected range, do not cover the heater, because after screeding a fault can only be found by breaking up the floor.

Häufige Fragen

Does floor heating work on an open balcony?
It does, but the expectation has to be set correctly: on an open balcony the system heats the floor, not the air volume. At an outside temperature of −10 °C the warmed air rises away and the ambient temperature does not increase; the floor, however, will not freeze. On a glazed balcony the air stays within the space, so the room warms as well.
Does conservatory floor heating melt snow?
This product is comfort heating, not a snow melting system. Light snow falling while it runs will not settle, but it does not have the output to melt accumulated snow. Snow and ice melting is a separate product in the SnowMax family.
Why is 200 W/m² needed — is the indoor rating not enough?
It is not enough; heat loss in these spaces is higher than indoors. Over 15 m², 200 W/m² gives a connected load of 3,000 W; the same surface at the indoor rating would come to only 2,250 W. At the lower rating the system would run continuously.
Can conservatory floor heating be laid under timber decking?
No. Timber and composite decking sit on joists with a ventilation gap beneath; the heat disperses into that gap before it reaches the deck and the surface never warms. Timber is also a poor conductor and expands and contracts with moisture.
What happens if water freezes under the screed?
Freezing water expands and pushes the finish upwards, lifting it — this is the most common form of damage outdoors. The remedy has three steps: apply waterproofing, form falls to the drains, and grout the joints in the finish.
