Überblick

The floor heating cable fixing strip is a galvanised steel fixing strip with teeth at 2.5 cm intervals, used to fasten floor heating cable to the floor at even spacing and under light tension. The strip is screwed or glued to the floor, the cable is pressed between the teeth, and it stays at the same spacing throughout the laying. It is sold in a 20 metre roll; one roll covers roughly 5 m² of heated area. If the spacing is disturbed, the cables come closer together, hot and cold bands form in the floor and the system may fail later.

Ist dies das richtige Produkt?

Passend, wenn

  • You will lay floor heating cable as a free roll beneath screed.
  • You want to set the cable spacing yourself and hit the W/m² figure in the project.
  • You are working in wide, regular areas such as a living room, hallway or open-plan kitchen.
  • Your room plan is irregular and the ready-made mat size does not fit.

Nicht geeignet, wenn

  • If you are going to use a floor heating mat — on a mat the cable already comes stitched onto a ready mesh at fixed spacing; you simply unroll the mat and lay it, so buying strip is an unnecessary expense.
  • If you are laying a small bathroom of a few square metres — fibreglass fixing tape is cheaper and easier to work with in a confined space.
  • If you are wrapping cable around a pipe — this strip is for floors; on a pipeline, heat tracing cable wrapped around the pipe body is used.
  • If what you are looking for is insulation beneath the floor — the strip does not reduce heat loss; for that there is technical thermal and acoustic insulation underlay laid beneath the screed.
  • If you can neither drive screws into the floor nor apply adhesive — a strip that cannot be fixed down is of no use.

Installation

Yes, you can lay it yourself — laying the strip requires no electrical knowledge and is done with hand tools; the electrical connection of the cable is made by a qualified person.

Warning: While the screed is being poured, take care that the rows of cable do not come closer together or cross one another; cable that overlaps overheats at that point.

Häufige Fragen

How many square metres does one roll cover, and how many rolls should I buy?
A 20 metre roll covers roughly 5 m² of heated area; that works out at roughly 4 metres of strip per square metre. Divide the area by 5 and round up: 4 rolls for 18 m², 8 rolls for 40 m². On a plan with many turns, buying one extra roll to allow for cutting makes the work easier.
What material is the floor heating cable fixing strip made of?
Galvanised steel strip: 1 cm wide, 1.5 mm thick, 400 g per roll. Because it stays inside the screed, a galvanised coating is preferred; the strip is cut with tin snips or an angle grinder.
How does it change the cable spacing, and how can I hit the W/m² figure?
The teeth are 2.5 cm apart; by clipping the cable into the tooth that suits your plan, you tighten or widen the spacing in 2.5 cm steps. When you change the value given as the C-C spacing in the installation manual, the wattage per square metre changes too; stick to the spacing stated in the project.
Is this strip needed with a floor heating mat as well?
No, it is not needed. On a mat the cable already comes stitched onto a ready mesh at fixed spacing at the factory; you simply unroll the mat and lay it. The fixing strip is only for installations where the cable is unwound from a roll and laid free — if you are buying mat, do not add this product to your basket.
I cannot drive screws into the floor — can I still use it?
Yes, the strips can also be fixed with adhesive. First the surface must be dry and free from dust, mortar residue and grease. The test is this: the strip must hold firmly enough not to shift while the screed is being poured. If there is an insulation layer on the floor, gluing is preferred.
